Learn to Design Your Own Garden at The Atelier ::
The Atelier is a design studio. It is situated in a glorious rural location in one of the most beautiful parts of the Suffolk countryside, a few miles from Aldeburgh and the Heritage Coast.
It is owned and run by Mary Kennedy, a landscape and garden designer.
Courses at The Atelier ::
From May 2007 The Atelier opens for regular one-day courses on garden design, taught by Mary Kennedy.
These courses are for people who would like to design, or re-design, all or part of their own gardens.
No previous design experience is necessary, nor any established drawing skills.
Courses are organised on a workshop basis, with a limited number of participants on each course.
Course Content ::
Each course is one intensive day, running from approximately 9.45 am to 6 pm.
Participants receive a thorough grounding in the preparation work needed before starting to draw up a garden design, as well as the basic techniques for drawing up a design. They practise these, through a series of exercises and, by the end of the day, have completed a garden design of their own.
The day includes lots of individual help, support, advice, encouragement, tips and inspiration. Participants are also provided with detailed notes of everything that has been covered during the day.
Approximately the last hour of the afternoon is spent relaxing with a glass of wine and discussing what has been learnt during the day and dealing with any further questions anyone may have.
The Inner Gardener ::
A delicious lunch is provided and tea, coffee and soft drinks are available ad lib all day. Participants are encouraged to make themselves at home. A small library is also available for browsing.
The Outside World ::
The Atelier lies in the grounds of the Kennedys’ home, which they bought in 2001 in a more or less derelict condition. Ten or so acres of wilderness are gradually being turned into gardens. Weather and time permitting, each course includes a short tour of the gardens, which serve as practical examples of the decisions to be taken when designing a garden, and of problems addressed and solved. Participants are also welcome to roam the grounds on their own in any spare moments (everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace).
Other Things To Do in the Area ::
People travelling with a non-gardening partner or friend may like to be aware of some of the many other activities available in this wonderfully unspoilt part of the world, such as walking, birdwatching, beaches, golf. Brief details of some of these, together with those of a few special places to stay, and eat, locally are included in About the Area.
A Special Note ::
The Atelier is fully wheelchair accessible. If you are a wheelchair user, or have any other access requirements with which we can help, please let us know.
We hope to welcome you here
